Crystal and Natasha are a rare duo. They are not just two girls that sing together, they are extremely talented sisters. It is not every day that you find two sisters that share the same talent or interest. These girls prove that anything is possible!

In Their Words: Causes that they Support

My sister Crystal and I have been brought up listening to stories of the missionary work going on in different places around the world and when we were about 8 and 10, we went on our first mission trip to Honduras. It was most definitely an eye-opening experience for us; I saw poverty like you wouldn’t believe, people literally living in a card board shacks, and barefoot children everywhere. Here in America we go through hard times, but trust me it is nothing like those people go through. We need to thank god for our blessings, and share what we have with others…

The project that is dearest to my sister’s and my heart is ‘Living Springs Overseas Mission.’ The wonderful man who the orphan children call ‘Uncle Bill’ just as we grew up doing, runs the orphanage over there and he can tell you stories that will bring tears to your eyes. In India girls especially are treated so terribly, so brutally and we want to help to change that around. Some of our friends went there to help out and their daughter got sick with Ecoli and has since lost her memory and now has only the mental capacity of about a 2-year-old. But despite this her family has kept up their work for the people and especially the children of India. You and I may never face anything like what they went through, in fact we may never step foot out of our respective countries, but we can still help. To learn more about this project please go to: http://www.outpostcenters.org/ministries/living_springs.html

Another project my sister and I were asked to try and help is ‘International Children’s Care’ you can learn more about them at, www.forhiskids.org . Other causes that tug on my heart strings are, supporting out troops (http://www.americasupportsyou.mil/americasupportsyou/help.html), Saint Jude’s Children’s hospital (http://www.stjude.org/), the Muscular Dystrophy Association (http://www.mdausa.org/) and Kristy’s appeal (www.kristysappeal.co.uk). Which ever cause touches your heart the most, like the India project that touches mine, is the one that I ask you to please support with your funds and prayers. You’ll never know how much good you can do, until you try.

                            Interview with Crystal and Natasha

Q.) It is quite unusual for two sisters to have the talent and desire to do the same thing, how do you pull it off?                                                                         A.)Whenever you work with more than one musician there are going to be artistic differences, because we are all individuals and that can be both wonderful and enviably difficult at times. But prayer and a common goal gets you through the rough spots!

Q.) When did you start singing and why?
A.) We have been singing ever since we were… well much younger than we are now! We used to sing at church and on long car trips, but it wasn’t until we saw a TV commercial for Charlotte Church that we were properly introduced to classical music. I (Natasha) used to sing on my own but my grandmother always insisted that we should sing together – needless to say, she is a very intelligent woman! We loved singing and we felt we could make a difference through by witnessing to others about Jesus and showing an alternative to some of the crazy music that’s out there.

Q.) Have you done duets with each other ever since you started singing?
A.) We have always sung in church together, partly because sometimes we were the only children in our Sabbath School class! But as mentioned above, I believe it was first my Grandmother’s idea that we should sing together! And it’s been absolutely wonderful!

Q.) What do you like most about duet performing?
A.) The support system! When your feeling nervous it’s amazing to be able to look over and see your sister smiling back at you and knowing that she is there for you! Also the harmonies! There are so many GORGEOUS harmonies, especially now that our voices have are maturing. Neither one of us used to like singing harmonies that much, and preferred to just take turns singing verses or lines of a song. But now we really love it and also have grown fond of arranging the music we sing!

Q.) What do you dislike about duet performing?
A.) Finding time to practice together! That can be very hard sometimes, especially when we really need to rehearse new music for a concert!

Q.) Do you think you will keep doing duets or got to solo singing?
A.) Crystal and I will always stay singing together! I love being able to sing with her, and I am extremely blessed to have been able to do so for all this time. She is an amazing vocalist that any record label would be LUCKY to have. We have chosen to major in difference fields because of what we feel called to do, for Crystal it’s serving others through nursing. She is incredible compassionate and kind and she will be an amazing nurse. I however will remain singing. I believe it is what I was born to do, it’s my first love and what I’ve poured my heart into working on all these years, and it’s the way I feel I can help and bring happiness to others. Because music is my chosen career, I will most definitely work as a solo artist but I’m pretty sure that ‘Crystal & Natasha the duo’ will continue on for the rest of our lives, either professionally in concert halls or in our home church! God has given us the talent and with that a responsibility, which is not something that can be taken lightly. So by the grace of God we will always use our gifts to serve him!

Q.) What are things that help you keep going when things seem to be falling apart?
A.) God and our faith in his word. The world we live in is falling apart, and if it wasn’t for that faith I really don’t see much of a reason for living. Another thing that holds us together is being part of a family that really loves each other! Many bands that have been put together eventually end in big public fights with accusations flying everywhere. Crystal and I on the other hand were born as a team – sister’s and best friends. No matter what happens, we will be there for each other. My parents have brought us up with a strong sense of family, my Mother especially has always told us that no matter how much you love your friends, family always comes first… and then there is music itself. Music is very healing for me and after a concert when I feel drained or just when I’ve been hurt of feel lonely, it soothes and gives me faith and hope for the future.

Q.) Do either of you perform solo?
A.) We perform solos at our concerts and have performed solos in recital’s at the Westchester Conservatory, and also have a couple solos each on our second album. We are very difference vocally and in our musical tastes. Crystal, in many ways, is a classical purist, while I am a huge fan of the new classical crossover trend. She is a soprano and I am a mezzo, voice types that produce very different color and tones in the voice. But to me, the differences only make a stronger and more powerful duet!

Q.) What are you currently working on?
A.) Well, several things! I of course have my online magazine, and Crystal and I are both working on books. Crystal has her manuscript, “Even Unto Death” and I have mine entitled, “I Want to Sing” that we are trying to have published. We are both starting to write new stories as well. I am also in the first stages of trying to write my first opera! It is going to very challenging for me but I am really excited about the idea! I mean I can’t promise that I will actually ever finish it, but I’m going to give it my best shot! I’ve played the main character to be a mezzo which will be great if I can pull it off, because there are so few starring roles for mezzo sopranos! Maybe Katherine Jenkins (who Crystal and I both admire and love!) could premiere in the role?! Now that would be amazing!

Q.) What are your plans for college or the future?
A.) We are just going through all of this at home now! Crystal is already in college and I will hopefully be joining her shortly! Crystal is going to major in nursing and also have a minor in music, while I plan to major in vocal performance. I haven’t decided on my minor yet but it will definitely be music oriented in some way or other, either management or producing videos or design so I can do more for myself in the business! And after that? Only God knows! I have more than my share of dreams and ambitions for the future, so here’s to them someday coming true!
